National Penny Day
With National Penny Day fast approaching on May 23, the penny will be spotlighted with some interesting facts each week of May.
Pennies were the very first coins minted in the United States in 1793, the mint distributed 11,178 copper cents.
Abraham Lincoln first appeared on the penny in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth. Due to this fact and the limited quantity of them made, the 1909 Lincoln is one of the most sought-after pennies for collectors.
Coming in 2009, the penny will get a one-year, four-coin commemorative program marking the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth, which means this year is the last year the Lincoln Memorial will be on the back of the penny.
In 2010 Lincoln’s likeness will remain, but the rest of the penny will be redesigned.
